What to Expect

A session at Colorado Kambo Clinic includes Sananga, Kambo, and Hapé Ceremonies.

Sananga Ceremony (Optional)

Sananga, also know as becchete, is an optional treatment that is included in each session. It is administered in drop form to the eyes and is extracted from the Tabernaemontana undulata shrub. Administered before the Kambo ceremony, Sananga helps to ease anxiety that clients may experience before a Kambo session. In the Amazon, the indigenous use it to refine their vision for hunting. It contains alkaloids and natural psychoactive compounds.

Sananga application creates an intense yet fleeting burning sensation in the eyes. After up to a few minutes, the burning sensation will pass and the client will feel a “flip” when the burning sensation ceases and will be replaced by feelings of peace and grounding. Sananga is a fitting compliment to the Kambo session as it helps to ease the nerves.

Kambo Ceremony

Preparation: Before a client is permitted to sit with Kambo, the practitioner and the client will meet for a free 20 minute consultation to review contraindications and preparation considerations in order to determine if Kambo is a safe and beneficial option for the client. Kambo also requires adherence to dietary and fluid-intake protocols. The participant is required to fast for 8-12 hours before the Kambo ceremony takes place. A strict water protocol must be followed before the client is permitted to enter the ceremony space and this will be explained in depth during the consultation. Once the client has adequately prepared and met the aforementioned requirements, the ceremony stage of the process is initiated. Before the application of Kambo occurs, the practitioner will open with a summary of the process and instructions for the client while they are sitting with Kambo. Sananga will then be offered if desired.

Burning the Skin: Small superficial burns are made on the participant's skin, usually on the upper arm, leg, or back. These burns are called "gates." The gates allow the secretion to enter the lymphatic system and travel throughout the body to the areas of greatest need. The practitioner will allow time for the client to state their intentions for the session. The practitioner will then prepare the secretion while the client drinks water.

Application of Kambo: The frog secretion is applied to the burns. The peptides in the secretion enter the bloodstream through these gates.

Immediate Effects: The effects of Kambo are rapid and intense. They often include nausea, vomiting, sweating, rapid heart rate, and heightened emotional and physical sensations.

After Effects: After the initial intense phase, participants often feel a sense of clarity, increased energy, and emotional relief. Some report long-term benefits such as improved mood, enhanced immune function, and relief from chronic pain or illnesses.

Hapé Ceremony (Optional)

Hapé is a tobacco-based shamanic snuff offering that has been used for centuries by the Amazonian tribes to clear bad luck or “Panema” from the individual. We also offer a nicotine-free blend derived from the Awiry plant for those sensitive to nicotine. The mapacho found in many blends is a wild tobacco (Nicotiana rustica) in contrast to the Nicotiana tabacum species used in cigarettes in the West.

Hapé is applied by blowing a fine powder mixture of the sacred tobacco mixed with ashes of herbs and tree bark into the nose. The composition of each blend varies depending on the tribe it is sourced from. It contains beta-carbolines, harmala alkaloids, harmane, and norharmane. It has grounding effects, promotes focus, and is an excellent complement to a Kambo session.
